Motorcycle Accidents
The popularity of riding motorcycles has increased dramatically in the past several years. Unfortunately, accidents, injuries and deaths associated with riding motorcycles have increased as well. There were approximately 7.1 million motorcycles in use on America's roads in 2007. That same year, 123,000 motorcycles were involved in crashes, while 5,145 fatal accidents involving motorcyclists were reported, the tenth year in a row that motorcycle fatalities have increased. This is the highest level since the Department of Transportation began collecting data in 1975. Just one year earlier, there were 4,837 reported fatalities. Interestingly, the biggest jump in fatalities has been motorcyclists over the age of 40.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that motorcyclists were 35 times more likely to die in a crash and eight times more likely to be injured when compared to accidents involving passenger cars. Many of these accidents occur because motorcycles, by there very nature, are smaller and more difficult to be seen. Statistics show that motorcycle accidents are often the fault of the other driver involved because they were not paying attention and failed to see the motorcyclists.
Of course, injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents can be serious or fatal. The Terry Law Firm believes that there should be compensation for motorcyclists injured through no fault of their own.
