Settlement of Case Where Man Died From Infection of Multiple Bed Sores
D.D. suffered an event of cerebral hypoxia that left him with a severe brain injury and unable to care for himself. As a result of his incapacity, his wife was unable to provide him with the 24 hour a day care he required. After much deliberation, she placed him into a St. Louis County, Missouri skilled nursing facility after receiving assurances that they could provide him quality care, despite his medical problems and total need for assistance.
The first nursing facility in which he was placed allowed D.D. to develop multiple bed sores in just two months. D.D. experienced various infections, aspiration pneumonia, malnourishment, dehydration, and contractures, all in just two months. Concerned for his health, his wife had D.D. transferred to a different facility, who agreed to accept him despite his condition. Unfortunately, the second facility failed to provide better care. D.D. often went a week or more with no bath, while his wounds and his overall condition dramatically worsened. By the time his wife transferred him to a third facility, D.D. had multiple bed sores, many of which were classified as "Stage IV" and many were infected. He was also severely malnourished and dehydrated.
D.D. died from the injuries inflicted upon him at the nursing home facilities that were supposed to provide quality care. His wife initiated a wrongful death lawsuit that was later settled upon the condition that the settlement amount remain confidential.
